Sawyer turned the key off in the ignition, giving his F150’s engine a rest from a hectic day of city driving. All it had done was land him right back here at the compound. He’d been to seven different residences and businesses, checking off the names that had been listed on the visitor’s log of people who had gone to see Moss in prison.

A lot of the visitors were generally local to the prison; however, there were a number of them who were out of the area. He had gone through the list, prioritizing them by how promising the leads were and their physical location.

The vast majority of guests had been journalists and writers, though one had been a woman who had some type of sick fantasy of being Moss’ soulmate. She had wanted to marry him and bear his children. Fortunately, the state of Florida didn’t provide conjugal visits—not that Moss would have qualified if there had been.

That brief questioning had led Sawyer to reach out to a psychiatrist he’d met at the hospital when he’d been electrocuted by a generator on one of SSI’s first assignments. Their introduction hadn’t been based on his own mental stability. They had met when she’d been consulting on another case in the same emergency room. One thing had led to another, and she’d ended up asking him to join her for drinks after he was cleared to go home by the attending ER physician.

Sawyer was beginning to think he should have taken up the attractive doc’s offer. Maybe then Camryn Novak wouldn’t have been in his every waking thought.

“Get your head out of your ass,” Sawyer muttered to himself, reaching for the manila folder that was laying on the passenger’s seat. He still had quite a few people he needed to pay a visit in order to determine if there were any undiscovered leads to Moss’ whereabouts, but it was going on twenty-one hundred. Calvert should be back from his meeting with Shailyn Doyle’s father soon. Sawyer suddenly recognized a quick movement in his side view mirror. “You know better than to sneak up on a man who just spent the day talking to a whole pile of crazy people.”

“I wasn’t sneaking up on you,” Ashlyn laughed, switching her brown satchel briefcase into her other hand as she rested her fingers on Sawyer’s open truck window. “I thought I would see if you wanted anything from town. Keane’s about to drive through the city.”

“No, thanks. I’m good.” Sawyer yanked the key from the ignition. With the folder in hand, he waited for Ashlyn to take a couple of steps back before he opened his door. “I’ve got to say, it’s odd having all of us stay here at the estate. Someone is going to start thinking we’re part of a cult out here in the boondocks.”

“Nah,” Ashlyn said as she carefully maneuvered her way across the gravel drive in her high heels. She was dressed in a conservative business suit, having been in court all day fulfilling her duty as a special federal prosecutor.
